In the latest issue of the Autosprint magazine there is a long interview with former Scuderia Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali, who currently is the chief executive officer of Formula 1. We offer you an excerpt in which the Italian manager talked about what he expects from the Maranello team in the upcoming season and beyond.
Stefano Domenicali’s words on Ferrari
Thanks to his work in the last few seasons, the fifty-seven-year-old Italian has been improving the Formula 1 championship in terms of popularity and world wide interest. The sport has now reached a level greater than his predecessor Bernie Ecclestone could ever have imagined. Two years ago Formula 1 was worth eight billion, now it is already worth sixteen.
When at the beginning of the discussion Stefano Domenicali was asked what his plans are for 2023 after a 2020 characterized by the pandemic, 2021 by gradual recovery and 2022 by the growth of the brand, he replied: “Consolidation. We have everything we need to lay the foundations for further improvement thanks to the quality and enthusiasm of our partners. Formula 1 today is not just a sport, but it is a phenomenon of entertainment and involvement. Later, some other formats will also be tested, but for now it is still too early to talk about it” – he explained.
Then speaking of Scuderia Ferrari and how much of the success achieved by this sport is due precisely to the Maranello team, the F1 chief executive officer added: “Ferrari has had difficult moments and I think they are overcoming them. Returning to success is a great responsibility. Those who manage the team have all the elements to be competitive. I am convinced that this year Ferrari will be one of the best. However, the series is growing regardless of the results of the Italian team. We are discovering new markets and lots of new fans.” – he pointed out.

Stefano Domenicali, in addition to being the head of the most important motorsport racing series, was also one of the Ferrari team principals in the past. Precisely from this point of view, he was asked if he believed in an open fight between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz just like in the past there was that between Senna and Prost or rather he feels the Mercedes / Red Bull models with Hamilton / Verstappen are more efficient, meaning a team that is fully focused just on one driver:
“The Senna-Prost duels have always ended up in the grave. Today the competitive level is so high that a team must have clear rules and maximize points. Then it’s obvious that in the position I’m in now, everything suits me: the more they fight, the better”.
As a last question on the Maranello team, he was asked for his opinion on Mattia Binotto and if believes the ex-Ferrari team principal will return to Formula 1 in the future. Stefano Domenicali explained: “When you arrive in those top positions after having worked for thirty years in Formula One, the question you ask yourself, which I ask myself, is: do you want to continue to be in this world or are there other possibility? It will all depend on him, Formula 1 is small compared to the world, and out there it’s full of wonderful opportunities.” – he concluded.
In the second part of this long interview you will find some important statements regarding the Formula 1 races in Italy and the 2023 calendar.
