The reliability of the Ferrari power unit has been one of the main topics of discussion during the 2022 Formula 1 championship and the months leading up to the winter pre-season testing session which took place at the Bahrain International Circuit last week in view of the new Formula One world championship. From Baku to Barcelona, via Spielberg. The power unit reliability was one of the key reasons which did not allow the Italian team to challenge Red Bull in the second half of the previous campaign, with the Austrian side able to easily win both championship titles in 2022, despite a great start from Ferrari, who had won two of the first three rounds, in Bahrain and Australia.
As the 2022 Formula 1 season progressed, Ferrari started to encounter several technical failures: in the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya – Barcelona, Charles Leclerc was on his way to taking a victory that would have allowed him to increase the gap in the Drivers standings over Max Verstappen when he had to stop due to a power unit issue. Similarly to what happened in Baku, despite the fact that in Azerbaijan the superiority of the F1-75 car was not as evident as it was in Barcelona.
In a recent interview for the Spanish media, it was Carlos Sainz himself who spoke about the reliability of the new Ferrari engine. “I wouldn’t talk about an improvement, rather it has returned to a good level like in the first part of 2022. We certainly suffered a lot last year on the reliability side, it’s no secret” – the Ferrari driver admitted – “In Mexico, for example, we knew we would suffer in the race. There were circuits where we had more problems and others where we had fewer, so we had to be more careful on some occasions.” – the Spaniard added.
The former McLaren driver said he was happy with the new Power Unit, after what he tested during the three days of Formula 1 pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit: “The engine is good, I have no doubts. As a team we are trying to work on reliability in order to be able to always push the power unit to the limit, as we would have liked to do last year.” – Carlos Sainz pointed out.
