The upcoming 2026 F1 regulations have sparked concerns among fans and insiders alike, but the CEO of the sport is calm, emphasizing the mechanisms designed to limit potential “dominance situations.” The focus, Stefano Domenicali explains, is on competitiveness. As often happens following significant technical changes, one team might gain a considerable advantage over its rivals. However, Stefano Domenicali believes this will not be the case.
For the first time since the introduction of ground effect in 2022, there are three drivers genuinely fighting for the World Championship with just four races remaining. From mid-season onwards, it has become clear that all the top teams – McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull – can trade performance on track, making every weekend unpredictable.
In this context, which some argue would have made the next season one of the most exciting ever if the regulations had remained unchanged, it is hard to imagine how a technical revolution might impact the spectacle on track. Stefano Domenicali, however, quickly addresses the concerns of fans and insiders.
Stefano Domenicali: “There are mechanisms to prevent boredom”
In an interview published on Adam Cooper’s blog, the seasoned Formula 1 journalist, the CEO of the Circus is clear: “As we have always said, the sport is at the heart of our platform, and no one should doubt that.”
He continues, “It is natural to think that when there is such a major change in the regulations, there could be significant differences at the start. But the regulations are structured so that, if that happens, there are mechanisms in place to ensure that gaps can be reduced quickly. This is a very important element to preserve the dynamism of our sport.” – the former Ferrari team boss pointed out.
The former Ferrari executive believes there are many points of interest looking ahead to the next season. The management of the car and tires will change, as will energy management, and overall, drivers will need to adapt to a very different driving style. The goal for everyone is to make the championship competitive, a key factor in attracting major manufacturers.
