According to the latest rumors from Spanish media, Alpine and McLaren have reportedly set their sights on Carlos Sainz, while the renewal of the Spanish driver’s contract with Ferrari remains uncertain at the moment. While Charles Leclerc’s extension seems to be a more advanced scenario, Carlos Sainz is still in the dark about his future with Ferrari after the contract expires at the end of 2024. Team Principal Fred Vasseur has stated that driver renewals will be addressed at the end of the season.
Alpine and McLaren Target Carlos Sainz: What About the Renewal with Ferrari?
“The future of Carlos Sainz at Ferrari is becoming increasingly uncertain,” reports the Catalan newspaper El Nacional. “The Spanish driver, whose contract with the Italian team ends in 2024, feels overlooked compared to Charles Leclerc. It is clear that Carlos Sainz will continue working at Ferrari only if Charles Leclerc departs, which seems complicated. Therefore, he will have no choice but to leave.”
According to El Nacional, it appears that both McLaren and, especially, Alpine are waiting for the renewal with the Maranello team. Esteban Ocon’s contract, like Carlos Sainz’s, expires at the end of the 2024 Formula One season, and given the tense atmosphere at Alpine, Esteban Ocon’s renewal currently does not seem like a viable option.
In case of a move to Enstone, Carlos Sainz would obviously become the team leader. However, the Spaniard would want a competitive car capable of challenging for the title, something Alpine cannot guarantee, at least for now.
The alternative option would then be McLaren, a more favorable destination for Carlos. The question regarding Lando Norris’ future has been a hot topic in Woking for weeks, with Norris increasingly linked to Red Bull as a possible successor to Sergio Perez.
“What seems increasingly unlikely is that Carlos Sainz will continue working at Ferrari,” adds the Catalan newspaper. As we know, McLaren has secured Oscar Piastri until 2026, with the Australian set to become the cornerstone of the British team in the immediate future.

Clearly, the Spanish driver’s top choice would be to continue his journey with the Ferrari team, having recently reiterated that he has no issues with his teammate. In any case, all will be revealed in about a month when bothCarlos Sainz and Scuderia Ferrari must lay their cards on the table.
