Charles Leclerc claimed his fifth podium finish of the 2025 Formula 1 season at the Belgian Grand Prix, securing third place ahead of Max Verstappen. This result was particularly significant as it highlighted the ongoing duel between Ferrari and Red Bull’s star drivers.
Ferrari had placed considerable expectations on their newly introduced rear suspension upgrade to improve their performance at Spa-Francorchamps. While the upgrade was widely anticipated to help close the gap to McLaren, the Woking-based team maintained their advantage throughout the race. Oscar Piastri comfortably took victory for McLaren after teammate Lando Norris made a costly error during the safety car restart. Norris was unable to regain position once Piastri pulled ahead along the Kemmel Straight. Meanwhile, Leclerc found it challenging to close the gap to the McLarens and ultimately settled for third place. Throughout the race, however, he was locked in a relentless battle with Max Verstappen, with the aerodynamic turbulence or “dirty air” at Spa making overtaking difficult. As a result, Verstappen remained behind Leclerc for the entirety of the event.
Leclerc reportedly acknowledged the physical and mental toll that battling Verstappen imposed on him, noting that he had to fight fiercely to keep the four-time world champion behind his Ferrari. This intense contest was ultimately rewarded with a valuable podium finish, helping Ferrari maintain their position ahead of Mercedes in the constructors’ championship standings.
The close racing between Charles Leclerc and the Dutchman at the Belgian Grand Prix has fueled calls among F1 fans for the two drivers to be pitted against each other in more equal machinery. Their average lap times throughout the race were separated by just one thousandth of a second, underscoring the incredibly tight competition between the pair.
Fans took to platforms such as Reddit to voice their strong desire to see Leclerc and Verstappen compete head-to-head with cars on equal footing. Many pointed to their previous battles as evidence of a compelling rivalry that could produce one of the most entertaining matchups in modern Formula 1.
One fan expressed the hope to witness the duo fight for a full season title in similarly competitive cars, highlighting that their aggressive driving styles complement each other perfectly and result in thrilling wheel-to-wheel action that remains controlled and respectful. Another lamented that Leclerc has yet to be consistently provided with a championship-contending Ferrari car, describing it as a missed opportunity to witness Verstappen’s strongest rival since Lewis Hamilton.
Several fans agreed that a season-long battle between the two would be closely fought and exhilarating, with one recalling their brief but intense wheel-to-wheel encounters in 2022, which showcased clean, hard racing without contact. Another fan commented on Leclerc’s enthusiasm for racing Verstappen, noting how the Monegasque driver has often expressed excitement at facing such a fiercely competitive opponent.
Yet another observer noted that the rivalry is intense and that Verstappen is well aware that crossing the line risks retaliation from Leclerc, who would not hesitate to push back hard.
Despite the positive signs from Charles Leclerc’s performance, Ferrari’s work remains incomplete. His teammate Lewis Hamilton praised Leclerc’s drive at Spa, where Hamilton himself recovered from a pit lane start to finish seventh after failing to advance beyond early qualifying sessions.
The Briton’s results continue to demonstrate that he is still some distance from matching Leclerc’s pace, and even with the rear suspension upgrade, Ferrari still faces challenges to optimize the SF-25’s performance. The Monegasque expressed concerns about needing ‘extreme’ car setups to compensate for the SF-25’s handling quirks, particularly after discussions with Hamilton regarding the car’s behavior in wet conditions. This suggests the team still has significant development work ahead.
Looking forward, Ferrari is shifting its focus toward the 2026 season, which many consider to be Lewis Hamilton’s final realistic opportunity to secure another world championship. Although their chances of championship success this year appear slim for both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, Ferrari is hopeful that ongoing upgrades will provide a stronger foundation as the team prepares for the upcoming regulatory changes that could reshape the competitive order in Formula 1.
