Shell and Ferrari strengthen Formula 1 collaboration to improve engine reliability and performance. Shell and Ferrari deepen their Formula 1 partnership.

In modern Formula 1, attention is often focused on aerodynamic development, hybrid power units, and race strategy execution. However, one of the most critical yet less visible performance factors is the role of lubricants in ensuring both reliability and efficiency. Within this technical landscape, the partnership between Shell and Ferrari plays a decisive role in supporting the performance of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc across the Formula 1 season.

The hidden importance of lubricants in Formula 1 performance

Lubricants are a fundamental element in both motorsport and road car engineering, acting as a key enabler of performance and durability. According to Shell Motorsport Technology Manager Valeria Loreti, lubricants serve four primary functions: reducing engine wear, minimising friction, assisting thermal management, and maintaining stable performance under extreme operating conditions.

In Formula 1, where engines are pushed to their absolute limits, these requirements become significantly more demanding. Every component must operate under intense mechanical stress, with extreme temperatures and continuous high-speed load cycles experienced during race weekends by drivers including the Maranello team’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

How Shell and Ferrari work together to prevent power unit failures

Formula 1 power units operate in one of the most hostile environments in motorsport. High combustion temperatures, rapid acceleration phases, heavy braking zones, and constant lateral forces place extraordinary pressure on internal engine components. In this context, the lubricant must maintain stability without degrading, foaming, or losing its protective properties.

A key engineering challenge lies in finding the correct balance between protection and efficiency. A thicker oil film can better protect metal surfaces from wear, but it also increases internal friction, which can reduce the amount of usable energy delivered to the wheels of Ferrari’s cars.

Shell has highlighted that there is a continuous engineering compromise between maximum reliability, optimal protection, and overall performance efficiency. Every adjustment in lubricant formulation can directly influence the behaviour and output of Ferrari’s Formula 1 power units, which are relied upon by both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc during race conditions.

Reliability as a decisive factor in the Formula 1 championship

Reliability has become increasingly important in modern Formula 1 due to strict regulations that limit the number of power units each driver can use over the course of a season. Exceeding these limits results in grid penalties, which can heavily impact championship standings and race strategies.

For this reason, preventing mechanical wear or unexpected engine failures is just as important as developing raw performance. A single retirement caused by component failure can have significant consequences in the battle for points, particularly for top teams like Ferrari.

Data-driven development and continuous collaboration

The development of advanced lubricants for Formula 1 is not a standalone process but a result of long-term collaboration between Shell engineers and Ferrari’s technical departments. This partnership relies on continuous testing, advanced simulation tools, and detailed performance analysis.

Data collected during race weekends and testing sessions is used to monitor engine condition in real time, helping engineers detect early signs of wear or performance degradation. This allows Ferrari to make informed technical decisions that improve both reliability and competitiveness throughout the season.

Lubricants as a strategic performance factor in Formula 1

In a sport where performance margins are measured in thousandths of a second, even the smallest component can have a decisive impact on race outcomes. Lubricants, despite being largely invisible to spectators, are therefore a key strategic element in modern Formula 1 engineering.

The ongoing technical collaboration between Shell and Ferrari demonstrates how behind-the-scenes innovation supports on-track performance. For Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, this development work contributes directly to achieving consistent results, maintaining reliability, and maximising the performance potential of the Ferrari Formula 1 package.
