Sergio Pérez has discussed his difficulties during the 2023 season, drawing a parallel between Red Bull’s driver duo and Ferrari’s team line-up.
Checo’s season has been very challenging. The Mexican driver has struggled to match Max Verstappen’s performance in most race weekends, making several mistakes along the way.
His position in the standings (only 20 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton with three races left until the end of the 2023 Formula 1 championship) doesn’t reflect the cars’ performance at all, given the incredible technical superiority of the Red Bull RB19 car over their competitors.
Sergio Pérez’s comments
However, Sergio Pérez has not been able to extract the full potential from his car as Max Verstappen does: “Max manages to get more performance from the car. I struggle more and keep working to try to understand the reason.” – he believes.
The Mexican has compared the current situation at Red Bull to that of Ferrari’s two drivers: “It’s very similar to what happened at Ferrari with Charles [Leclerc] and Carlos [Sainz]. It seems that Carlos is finally comfortable with the car.”
Sergio Pérez continues undeterred, searching for a way to push his car to the limit as Max Verstappen does. Just a year and a half has passed since 2022, when the Mexican could outshine Max on several tracks. Will Checo be able to regain the luster he has gradually lost in the past two seasons? Only time will tell, but if he doesn’t, his seat could be seriously at risk; perhaps not for 2024, but certainly for 2025.
