The necessity to save fuel and the excessive wear of the compounds did not allow Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz to be able to at least fight with Lewis Hamilton for the third step of the podium in the Hungarian Grand Prix, the eleventh round of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship.
Interviewed by the international press at the end of the race, the Spaniard explained the ineffective defense against the seven-time Mercedes World Champion, specifying how the difference in pace of the latter’s W12 did not allow him to maintain third place behind Esteban Ocon and Sebastian Vettel, who later was disqualified for a fuel rules breach after the race, losing his second place, which meant Carlos still scored a podium finish despite being overtaken by the Mercedes driver at the Hungaroring track.
“In the final duel with Lewis I did not have tyres and fuel” – said the Spaniard from Ferrari – “In the last ten laps I had to make a lot of fuel saving and this prevented me from fighting on equal terms with Hamilton. However, its still remains a race and a start to the season in which I have shown that I am fast, even if I still did not manage to have a completely clean weekend. And in this regard I have to work and improve” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz explained.
