There are now nine days left before the official presentation of the new Scuderia Ferrari 2023 Formula 1 challenger: on February 14, the men from Maranello will unveil the single-seater that will compete in the following championship. If so far only the date, time and place of the presentation had been confirmed, it would seem that in Maranello they have also chosen the name of the new car. As reported by Franco Nugnes, in fact, the new Ferrari 2023, barring surprises, should be called SF23. It would therefore be a return to a more classic acronym, after calling the 2022 car the F1-75.
The new Ferrari, which will be driven on the track by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, will have the task of allowing the two drivers to fight for the world title, at the dawn of a season which represents an important moment for the Italian side. In fact, with the next championship just around the corner, Ferrari will begin the fifteenth season without winning a Formula 1 world title: the last title dates back to 2008, when Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa delivered the last constructors’ championship to Maranello.
Many, too many years now passed since the title has always ended up at Ferrari’s two great rival teams, namely Mercedes and Red Bull. From 2010 onwards, in fact, the Brackley team and the Milton Keynes team shared all the available world championships. In particular, Mercedes took 8 out of 13 world championships, while Red Bull “only” 5. Above all for these reasons, the pressures and expectations for Ferrari are very high this season.
If in 2022 the Maranello team was arriving at the start of the season after two seasons without a single race victory, the F1-75 challenger has instead been able to demonstrate great competitiveness. Without the countless strategical mistakes of the pit wall and the lack of reliability in the first part of the year, Charles Leclerc would probably have fought to the end with Max Verstappen for the world title. Furthermore, with 12 pole position won, Ferrari can certainly count on an important starting base.
The task that the new SF-23 will have this year will be to improve the ratio between poles and victories, improve reliability and better manage tire degradation, another major issue of the F1-75 challenger. If Ferrari were to be able to fix these problems, alongside some improved race strategies, it could be an exciting season, also considering a possible return of Mercedes in the fight for race wins.
