Sprint format in Formula 1, from Eddie Jordan there is a revolutionary idea. The now famous “Saturday mini-races” are destined not only to remain in the series but most likely even to multiply. A solution similar to the one already adopted in MotoGP, with a Sprint Race every weekend, could soon knock on the doors of the premier open-wheel racing series. A prospect that leaves many with mixed feelings.
Sprint Races are a major topic of discussion in contemporary Formula 1. They are either loved or hated, with opinions and views that often admit no compromise. If former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali, currently the chief executive officer of Formula 1, announces a further increase in their number, even matching that of the Grand Prix, some propose innovative solutions.
“I came up with a little idea, starting from the fact that I hate Sprint Races,” explains Eddie Jordan on the podcast Formula For Success. “They should be banned; they are terrible. However, if we have to keep them on the calendar, I would like the Sprint Races to be dedicated to young drivers, those who haven’t yet completed ten Grands Prix.”
“This is to give young drivers the opportunity to compete among themselves,” Eddie Jordan continues. “So that we, the fans, can get a preview of what the future holds. Understand where the potential lies. Also, to give a chance to all the drivers racing in the lower formulas, giving them the feeling of being able to aspire to Formula 1.”
An idea immediately supported by the podcast host, David Coulthard, who points out how such a format would prevent having drivers promoted from Formula 2 who then disappoint in Formula 1: “In Formula 1 there is a different pressure, it is something entirely different, the intensity, the pressure, the spotlight. Some people are not cut out for all of that.” – David Coulthard pointed out.
