Mercedes driver George Russell is ready to begin from pole position for the first time in his Formula 1 career after an impressive lap in Q3 yesterday at the Hungaroring racetrack in Mogyorod, ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
After a challenging pair of Friday practice sessions, George Russell and Mercedes sprung a surprise to beat the F1-75 cars of Scuderia Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc to secure P1 for today’s race.
However, Charles Leclerc has a great chance to recover some lost ground to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen after his French GP incident, with the 2021 F1 world champion starting back in 10th. Red Bull decided to run a new engine, turbo, MGU-H and MGU-K for Max Verstappen for the Hungarian GP. This is the Dutchman’s third unit. So a fourth unit in the future will mean a penalty.
Pierre Gasly will start the Hungarian Grand Prix from the pit lane after taking on an array of new power unit elements and exceeding his allocation for the 2022 Formula 1 championship.
