Monza races towards renewal
It won’t be the 140 days promised on January 8th, but Monza will manage to complete the renovation work on the Autodrome in time for the next Formula 1 Grand Prix. ACI president Angelo Sticchi Damiani proudly claimed this during the press conference presenting the progress of the works in the Temple of Speed.
The weeks of delay on the initial schedule do not worry Sticchi Damiani, who constantly monitors the progress of the works on the Italian track: the resurfacing of the asphalt will be completed with the wear layer by the middle of next week at the latest and in any case within 60 days from the start of the Grand Prix (as required by FIA regulations). By the end of June, the underpasses will also be completed: three refurbished, one (the one at Alboreto) built from scratch. All these elements are essential to aim for the renewal of the contract with F1 expiring in 2025.
Here is the progress of the works on the track, which also involved the curbs (all redone).
“The work has been heavier than I imagined. A great effort has been made and we will continue to do so, but it has been much heavier than I could have imagined. I thought it would be simpler,” commented Sticchi Damiani. “We have had many problems and they are not over (the president mentioned the continuous rains and the considerable amount of clay in proportion to the consolidated ground, a ratio thought to be 30-70 but instead was 70-30, ed). Formula 1 requires the Autodrome to be in the best possible condition. The Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini has shown great attention, I am sure he will do everything possible to support us. We as ACI have done everything possible and even more.” – ACI president Angelo Sticchi Damiani concluded.
