Racing Point was docked 15 constructors’ championship points and handed a €400,000 fine for running rear brake ducts deemed to be illegal as the FIA believe the parts to have been predominantly designed by Mercedes. Brake ducts are a listed part and as such must be wholly designed and manufactured in house.
After registering intent to appeal on Friday evening, Ferrari had 96 hours to confirm their desire to continue with the process. The same stipulation applied to Renault, McLaren and Williams, all of whom were asking for clarification on ‘copying’ and what the acceptable boundaries of the practice are viewed to be.
But ouf the four rival teams who lodged their intention to appeal the decision on Racing Point’s car – only two have gone through with the appeal. They are Renault, the original protesters, and Scuderia Ferrari.
And Renault Sport Formula 1 team principal Cyril Abiteboul is very appreciative of that.
“We know the very particular stature that Ferrari has in the sport, lots of car makers are in this sport also because of the unique prestige that Ferrari brings,” he says – “To a certain degree, Ferrari has been a bit of a goalkeeper of Formula 1 values across time, and the fact they stand by next to us, I think Ferrari and Renault together seeking clarification for the future of the sport is certainly something we are very satisfied with.” – Cyril Abiteboul explained ahead of the second free practice session at the Circuit de Catalunya.
