As known, despite the continued inconsistent performance of Sergio Perez in the last few years, Red Bull has decided to proceed with the renewal of the Mexican driver, extending his contract until the end of the 2026 Formula 1 season. This news became official yesterday, putting an end to months of speculation regarding the potential replacements for the 34-year-old driver from Guadalajara.

“It is an important moment to confirm our lineup for 2025, and we are very happy to continue working together with Checo. Continuity and stability are important for the Team, and both Checo and Max are a solid and successful partnership, which last year secured our first one-two finish in the World Championship,” said Christian Horner, boss of the Anglo-Austrian team.

“I am really happy to commit my future to this great Team. It is an unprecedented challenge to race for Oracle Red Bull Racing, both on and off the track. I want to thank everyone for the trust they are placing in me, it is immense, and I want to repay it with excellent results on and off the track,” added a radiant Sergio Perez.

However, the fans of the world champion team are currently less radiant, as they would have preferred a different type of driver alongside Max Verstappen for the future, especially now given the fact that Ferrari and McLaren have significantly reduced the gap. And Red Bull supporters have also had to endure some banter from Ferrari fans and Formula 1 enthusiasts in general.

“Congratulations to Scuderia Ferrari HP for winning the Constructors’ World Championship from 2024 to 2026,” wrote one user. “Renewal offered by: ScuderiaFerrari. I fear they have literally shot themselves in the foot with this move,” said another fan, while another pointed out that: “They want someone on a leash,” alluding to Sergio Perez’s status as a secondary driver within the team.

Then there are posts like “Thank you, Horner,” “This is the right time!” and “Now there is only one car to fear” – evidently posted by Ferrari fans – to a “Checo better than Newey” – clearly referencing the negotiation between the British engineer and Ferrari – and even a “I am almost crying” comment and a “now give us Verstappen and take Binotto!” In short, there’s something for everyone.
