The decision has been made byRed Bull boss Helmut Marko at last. It was evident from Miami onwards that Nyck de Vries would be replaced, given his underwhelming performance in the early part of the 2023 Formula 1 campaign.
The Dutch driver was dismissed even before the summer break, with only ten races completed and without the opportunity to compete in his home race. Starting from Hungary, AlphaTauri will welcome Daniel Ricciardo to join Yuki Tsunoda, a move that has implications for both the Faenza-based team and its parent company, Red Bull.
In early May, the Austrialian paid a visit to the Faenza factory to undergo a seat fitting for the AT04, a clear indication that he was a strong candidate to join the Italian outfit as Nyck De Vries’ replacement until the end of the current Formula 1 championship. The official confirmation arrived this week:
“I am very pleased to welcome and welcome Daniel back to the team. There is no doubt about his driving skills. He already knows many of us, and therefore his integration with him will be simpler and more direct. The team will benefit from so much experience thanks to him, who is an eight-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner. I would also like to thank Nick for his invaluable input during his time at AlphaTauri and wish him all the best for the future,” confirmed AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost in an official statement published on Tuesday.
Helmut Marko’s recent decision serves as a warning to Sergio Perez, indicating that Red Bull aims to downsize its academy and assemble a “dream team” of drivers. It is worth noting that Nyck De Vries was initially signed because there was a lack of young talent within the Red Bull academy.
Nyck De Vries was brought in with the belief that his “experience” could fill the void left by Pierre Gasly, particularly after his impressive performance in the Italian Grand Prix Monza last year, which convinced Red Bull to take a chance on him. Daniel Ricciardo’s arrival at AlphaTauri will undoubtedly provide a significant boost, but his appointment is primarily motivated by Red Bull’s pursuit of alternative options to enhance their current driver lineup.

This upcoming period with AlphaTauri, starting from the next round of the 2023 Formula 1 championship, the Hungarian Grand Prix, will intensify the pressure on Perez. If Daniel Ricciardo meets the team’s expectations, as demonstrated by his pace in the Silverstone test and simulator, while Sergio Perez continues to deliver inconsistent and underwhelming performances, it is not inconceivable that Red Bull will contemplate making changes.
Amidst all these transformations, Red Bull is patiently waiting to establish a “Dream Team” by 2025 or 2026. Liberty Media is strongly advocating for top teams to field two genuinely competitive drivers, aiming to revive the excitement of the sport, even if one team maintains dominance.
Recognizing the challenges of replicating seasons like 2020-2021, despite frequent technical regulation changes with limited longevity, Liberty Media views this approach as a viable alternative to maintain competitiveness in Formula 1.
Furthermore, following the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz, Oliver Mintzlaff has assumed the leadership of Red Bull, becoming the main point of contact for Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. The dynamics have changed compared to Dietrich’s era, with diverse visions and strategies for the future. One of the goals is to secure a second top-tier driver within the team. Additionally, there are intentions to enhance the efficiency of the RB academy by reducing some of the freedom granted to the 80-year-old Helmut Marko.
Consequently, AlphaTauri would transition into a genuine destination team in Formula 1, rather than a transient presence, granting Red Bull greater autonomy in terms of drivers. This aligns with recent developments as the World Championship team’s management has engaged with two prominent drivers whose contracts expire in 2024 and 2025.
Specifically, discussions have taken place with Lando Norris, who Helmut Marko has described as “the best young driver on the grid,” and Charles Leclerc, a highly significant and unexpected candidate considered by the Anglo-Austrian team. Talks with Charles Leclerc occurred in late May to explore the potential for a separation from Ferrari.
This strategic approach mirrors what Aston Martin has previously undertaken in anticipation of Fernando Alonso’s eventual departure, as they too sought a top-tier driver.
Consequently, Fred Vasseur has prioritized securing Charles Leclerc’s contract renewal for the past few weeks, leaving Carlos Sainz in a state of uncertainty. Unofficially, it appears that Sainz has not taken the situation well.
Red Bull’s objective is to plan for the near future and pair a top-tier driver alongside Max Verstappen while maintaining a reserve second driver. It is evident that acquiring drivers of Lando Norris or Charles Leclerc’s caliber will pose a considerable challenge, but they would form an explosive and highly talented duo that, in the event of continued dominance, would provide captivating moments in Formula 1.
