Max Verstappen achieved Red Bull’s 100th victory in the history of the Austrian team in last weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, a truly “young” team that is racing with an unreal success rate of 27% in terms of F1 events competed and wins achieved. The Dutch driver led the race from start to finish despite a Safety Car period and a performance that was not exactly flawless, as evidenced by Lewis Hamilton’s fastest lap, two tenths faster than the RB19 (until Sergio Perez mounted the soft tyres for the final lap of the race to secure the fastest lap).
Montreal is certainly not a circuit designed to highlight the characteristics of a car that still managed to win.
Marko and a highly competitive Ferrari
Helmut Marko had emphasized before qualifying that a Ferrari could have beaten Max Verstappen in Canada based on what was observed during Friday’s practice sessions. The race proved the Austrian team manager right: “Fortunately, the Ferrari cars started further back on the grid because they were faster than us on both compounds. We had some difficulties with the hard compound in getting it up to temperature.” – the Austrian former professional racing driver and current advisor to Red Bull admitted.
Max Verstappen surviving a bird strike
In addition to the “problem” encountered with the hard compound – Max Verstappen mentioned on the radio twice that he was not satisfied with it but then managed to find the right operating window – Helmut Marko pointed out that the impact with a bird could have been fatal for the RB19 #1:
“There was some damage, but fortunately, the radiator held up. Max Verstappen also risked going off track on his own over a curb, maybe because he was watching the race too much on TV. It’s incredible how he manages to follow the race from all angles.” Helmut Marko expects two weeks of celebrations leading up to the home race in Austria to mark Red Bull’s 100 victories: “We could never have dreamed of such a result. It will be a celebration for all our people.” – he admitted at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix.
