According to Ralf Schumacher, Carlos Sainz may not have the same level of talent as Charles Leclerc, but he is coming out ahead in the comparison with his teammate thanks to his mental strength. However, after the (rightful) praise of the Spaniard following his remarkable victory in the Singapore Grand Prix, the Monegasque’s fourth-place finish at the Suzuka circuit in Japan has reopened the debate about who can be considered the team leader inside the Ferrari box.
Ralf Schumacher has no doubts: Charles Leclerc is more talented, Carlos Sainz is mentally stronger.
“Leclerc is at a bit of a crossroads now, I believe,” said the former German driver, now a television commentator. “He needs to look around now because it’s pointless to have the eternal talent of being super fast but ultimately getting nothing out of it. Charles wants to make a difference with all his abilities and then crashes his car and also makes several mistakes. Sainz is more balanced.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out.
In recent times, especially after Carlos Sainz’s significant progress since returning from the summer break, there has been much talk about hierarchies at Ferrari, with real factions formed to defend their favorite driver within the team.
Carlos Sainz himself, during a recent press conference, admitted that he is tired of hearing about hierarchies, stating that the primary goal, both for him and Charles Leclerc, remains to bring Ferrari back to success.
“Do you believe that Leclerc and I are fighting to be number one (within the team)? The media is responsible for all this because in our contracts and in our driving styles, it is clear that the number one priority is Ferrari. Ferrari comes first, everything else comes after. The priority is for Ferrari to win. It has always been that way, and it will always be that way. Sometimes you are ahead, other times behind, sometimes you help your teammate, and other times he helps you. As much as people want to find a first and second driver, Charles and I have never had any problems. We have always worked perfectly together.” – the Spanish driver recently explained.

“Carlos Sainz doesn’t have Charles Leclerc‘s talent,” Ralf Schumacher added, continuing his analysis. According to the German, the Spaniard has been having the upper hand over the Monegasque this year because “he simply feels more comfortable with the car.”
Given that the Prancing Horse has decided to shift more towards Carlos’s driving style after the holidays, as it is better suited to the characteristics of the SF23 to unleash its full potential, the fans, and the media’s general opinion on the two red standard-bearers continue to change too quickly from one weekend to the next, and this does not bode well for either Charles Leclerc or Carlos Sainz.
