Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has indicated that Ferrari’s next generation of drivers may not necessarily require Lewis Hamilton to create a dominant “super team.” While Lewis Hamilton brought experience and a seven-time World Champion pedigree to the Scuderia when he joined in 2025, Schumacher suggested that the Italian team’s long-term strategy could involve younger talent alongside Charles Leclerc to maintain competitiveness in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton’s first year with Ferrari and challenges faced
Lewis Hamilton linked up with Ferrari in 2025, pairing with Charles Leclerc, who has been with the team since 2019. Expectations were high, with fans and pundits hoping that the combination of the British driver’s experience and the Monegasque driver’s speed would propel Ferrari back to the top of the Constructors’ Championship. However, the first season proved challenging, as neither driver managed to secure a Grand Prix victory. Charles Leclerc concluded the season in fifth place in the drivers’ standings, while Lewis Hamilton finished just behind him in sixth, leaving Ferrari with work to do to regain their competitive edge.
Ralf Schumacher highlights Oliver Bearman as Ferrari’s potential future star
With Ferrari now looking toward the future, Ralf Schumacher suggested that Oliver Bearman could be a key piece in building a new “super team.” Bearman, who made his full-time Formula 1 debut in 2025 with Haas, impressed by consistently outperforming his experienced teammate Esteban Ocon during his rookie campaign. Schumacher praised Bearman as “the man of the future,” emphasizing his potential to join Ferrari and complement Charles Leclerc for years to come.
Bearman, 20, has been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022 and has maintained close ties with the Scuderia throughout his junior career. These connections make him a strong candidate for a future Ferrari seat, especially as the team seeks to cultivate a blend of youth and experience to challenge the dominant teams in Formula 1.
Ralf Schumacher noted that Ferrari’s long-term plans could see Charles Leclerc paired with Bearman, forming a dynamic duo capable of restoring Ferrari’s reputation at the top of the grid. He explained that while there have been rumors about the Monegasque potentially leaving the Italian, he personally believes the Monegasque will remain with the team. The former Formula 1 driver added that Charles Leclerc had looked strong alongside Lewis Hamilton, despite facing some challenges during their first season together.
According to Schumacher, the combination of Charles Leclerc’s experience and Oliver Bearman’s rising talent could form a genuine “super team,” with Ollie Bearman continuing to develop as a young driver while Charles Leclerc provides stability and leadership.
Oliver Bearman has not yet formalized discussions with Ferrari
Despite the speculation linking Bearman to a future Ferrari seat, the young British driver confirmed that no formal talks have taken place regarding his potential promotion. Ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Bearman reflected on discussions he had with Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur but clarified that his future with the Scuderia has not been decided yet.
Bearman did, however, get a taste of Ferrari machinery during a one-off appearance at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, stepping in when Carlos Sainz was sidelined due to appendicitis. In that race, the Ferrari junior impressed by scoring points with a seventh-place finish and earning the Driver of the Day award, showcasing the speed and composure that have made him one of Formula 1’s most exciting young talents.
Looking ahead: Ferrari’s potential ‘super team’ strategy
With Lewis Hamilton now firmly established at Ferrari but the team also investing in young drivers like Oliver Bearman, the Scuderia appears to be planning a dual strategy: maintaining experienced championship-winning talent while nurturing a future star capable of long-term success. Combining Charles Leclerc’s proven pace with Bearman’s raw talent could allow Ferrari to construct a sustainable and competitive “super team,” positioning the team for both immediate and future victories in Formula 1.
As Ralf Schumacher highlighted, the next few seasons may see Ferrari focusing more on integrating young talent into the team’s structure while leveraging the experience of current stars like Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to maximize performance across the Constructors’ Championship.
