Charles Leclerc continues to adopt a cautious and measured approach during pre-season testing, despite finishing third overall on day one of the second block of Formula 1 tests in Bahrain. The Ferrari driver underlined his satisfaction with the significant mileage completed by the Ferrari SF-26, rather than focusing on outright lap times.
Leclerc keeps expectations in check
The Monegasque driver ended the opening day with the third-fastest time, just 0.280 seconds behind the benchmark set by George Russell. It is a notable result, especially considering that Charles Leclerc set his time during the morning session, when track conditions were less favorable in terms of grip and performance. In contrast, the Mercedes driver completed his fastest laps in the afternoon, benefiting from improved rubber on the racing line and warmer, more consistent temperatures while chasing performance.
However, Charles Leclerc did not appear particularly interested in the headline lap time — something he had already made clear during previous test sessions. More than the 1:33.739 recorded on the timesheets, the Ferrari driver seemed far more encouraged by the 70 laps he completed in the morning. That total rose to 117 laps for the SF-26 when adding the afternoon mileage covered by Lewis Hamilton.
Despite a minor technical issue that briefly slowed Lewis Hamilton during the middle of the afternoon session, reliability once again appears — at least for now — to be one of the strengths of the Maranello-based car. Completing such a high number of laps without major setbacks is often a more valuable indicator at this stage of the season than pure performance runs.
“This morning we completed our program without any problems,” Charles Leclerc commented at the end of the day. “For now, it’s very difficult to interpret the performance and that’s not what we’re focused on. We completed many laps, which is a positive aspect, and we will continue to push in the right direction over the next few days.”
The message from Charles Leclerc is clear: Ferrari’s priority during Bahrain testing is data collection, consistency, and understanding the new package, rather than chasing headline lap times. As the countdown to the season opener continues, the Scuderia appears determined to build solid foundations before revealing its true pace on track.
The first day of the second Bahrain test therefore highlights a Ferrari team that is prioritizing durability and data collection over raw speed, with Charles Leclerc emphasizing that while the lap times look promising, the focus remains entirely on completing the planned program and perfecting the SF-26’s reliability.
