Joseph Kosinski and speed: from Top Gun to the track
Last year, the world of cinema experienced the excitement and thrills of a long-awaited return to the big screen like Top Gun: Maverick, once again with Tom Cruise in the role of a US Navy fighter pilot. A 2022 box office hit directed by Joseph Kosinski, the same director who is now ready to make another movie still characterized by high speed, but this time with the km/h of the racetrack instead of the Mach of aviation.
Landing in Formula 1
Kosinski has announced that he is in pre-production of a movie centered on the world of Formula 1 (in collaboration with Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of Top Gun from 1986) and that will feature an exceptional cast consisting of Brad Pitt, with Lewis Hamilton for the first time in the role of producer. At the moment, we know almost nothing about the plot and even less about the title of the film, with filming not set to begin until July of this year. If the indicated timing is indeed respected, the film’s theatrical release should occur between late 2024 and early 2025, staying in theaters for a month before landing on Apple+ TV.
Possible plot
However, according to what is reported on IMDB, the story should focus on “a Formula One driver who comes out of retirement (Brad Pitt) to mentor and team up with a younger driver (likely Damson Idris).”
Joseph Kosinski, speaking to The Wrap, has nevertheless indicated what his main goals will be, namely to ‘immerse’ the viewer in the cockpit of the single-seater, as happened with Maverick in the cockpit: “Certainly seeing people react to a movie that is authentic and shot with a camera like Top Gun makes us feel good, because our approach works and is appreciated by the audience – he explained – it’s almost funny for me to see people who are so in love with real photography. The younger ones have hardly seen any, they are used to computer-generated images as a tool for big movies, so when you shoot something real, it seems innovative. This is exactly the approach for Formula One: shoot the real races, the real cars and capture them. It will be a huge but exciting challenge for me.” – he explained.
Lewis Hamilton not the protagonist
As a producer, Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton will not have a leading role in the film, as confirmed to the media by the man himself: “I have no intention of participating – he admitted – my responsibility is to ensure that the cast and crew are diverse. It’s about showing how beautiful this sport is to those who have never seen it, but also about making sure that the true heritage and true spirit of racing are preserved in the film.”

A cast that, according to the latest rumors, should also include Kerry Condon, but that will certainly feature Brad Pitt, in the role of actor and, above all, driver. At the last Formula One Accelerate Summit, it was in fact confirmed that the American actor will be behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car in the film’s main scenes.
