The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve is one of the newest circuits on the calendar, having been built in 2008. It hosted a Formula One Grand Prix for the first time in 2020, but had previously hosted in-season testing during 2008-09. The circuit’s challenge lies in its many elevation changes and tricky track surface.
Rather like Austin’s Circuit of The Americas, Portimao is a modern venue with elevation change baked into its layout. The Ricardo Pena-designed 4.6-km lap sends drivers swooping up hill and down dale, before culminating in a plunge down to the final right-hander at Galp leading back onto the pit straight.
Follow us in the afternoon for the latest news, updates and live results from the Portimao Circuit, as the second free practice session for the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix is about to get underway, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc at the wheel of the SF21, ready to continue evaluating the ideal set-up ahead of the qualifying session on Saturday and the race on Sunday.
