The hat-trick of events (Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort and Monza) was marked by almost all teams having to take penalties on the starting grid for replacing elements of the power units beyond the limit allowed by the rules. Respecting the threshold of three power units for 22 Grands Prix appears to be an increasingly impossible task, which is why the teams have planned in advance the rotation of their engines to minimize damage.
As often happened in the past, many teams chose the Belgian Grand Prix to change the power units, because the Spa-Francorchamps circuit offers numerous overtaking opportunities, and unlike past editions also in the Italian Grand Prix, to underline the fact that teams were aware they would have greater possibilities to recover during the race with the 2022 cars even at Monza. The many engine parts that have been replaced during the last three weeks have generated a lot of confusion for the public, making it appropriate to recap the situation.
In Belgium, Max Verstappen replaced all the components of the power unit, thus making sure he would be able to arrive at the end of the championship after the second power unit had suffered some issues during practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Red Bull also opted for a further replacement of the internal combustion engine at the Monza track on both RB18 cars of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, making sure they have a wider safety margin.
The latest generation hybrid system was introduced by Scuderia Ferrari, with the Maranello team thus taking the opportunity to carry out the fifth complete rotation of its power units, but between now and the end of the 2022 Formula 1 championship there could also be a sixth one.
The Mercedes engines continue to show off an enviable reliability, an aspect that probably became the main object of the work carried out in the winter by the Brixworth engine department after the progressive power failures suffered during the 2021 championship. Out of eight Mercedes-powered cars, only those of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton have exceeded the threshold of three rotations, with the multiple English champion forced to change one engine due to the irreversible damage suffered in Belgium after the violent impact following the accident with Fernando Alonso.
