After the Singapore weekend, F1 takes a short break before heading to Austin: let’s take a look at the situation regarding Power Unit elements and the resulting risks of penalties.
Formula One is preparing for the final rush of the 2024 World Championship. There are still six rounds left in the season, three of which include Sprint Races. Both championships are still wide open to any outcome, and as this season has shown us, surprises are just around the corner. The Sprint weekends, scheduled in Texas, Brazil, and Qatar, could also shake things up.
Following the unusual autumn break, teams will head to the Texan round in Austin, the second U.S. race in 2024. As the final rounds of the championship approach, the risk of grid penalties due to the replacement of certain power unit elements by F1 teams increases. The strict limits imposed by regulations are not always adhered to, especially in the event of technical issues.
Among the changes the paddock will encounter in Austin is a seat swap at V-Carb Racing Bulls. The Faenza-based team has replaced Daniel Ricciardo with fellow Australian Liam Lawson. The young driver will take the place of the experienced 35-year-old from Perth in Texas, but will debut with a grid penalty. Note: the table below reflects the situation at the end of the 2024 Singapore GP.
Many drivers are at the limit of using certain elements, while some have already exceeded the regulatory threshold and incurred penalties in past weekends. Let’s take a look at the summary table of the situation.
The legend for the table below:
ICE – Internal Combustion Engine (limit: 4)
TC – Turbocharger (limit: 4)
MGU-H – Motor Generator Unit – Heat (limit: 4)
MGU-K – Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic (limit: 4)
ES – Energy Store, battery pack (limit: 2)
CE – Control Electronics (limit: 2)

Red indicates elements where the limit has been exceeded, orange indicates elements at the limit, and green indicates elements not yet at the limit.
