Once the double-header in Asia was completed (Singapore and Japan), Formula 1 teams were already getting ready for the next round of head to head weekends, which takes place in the United States and Mexico, after a one week break. It is also a good moment to take a look at the number of power units components for this final part of the 2022 Formula 1 . The situation settled after the many engine changes seen in the triple-header following the summer break, when several teams took advantage of the track layout at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and Monza to introduce fresh elements and take penalties on the grid, aware that overtaking is possible on those tracks.
The new power unit elements has meant that no one in Asia needed to resort to new engines, barring anomalous situations, but a new round of changes is expected already in Austin, at the Circuit of the Americas.
George Russell was the only driver to replace the power unit over the past two weekends. In Singapore, Mercedes wanted to take advantage of the situation after the Englishman was eliminated in Q2 and mounted a fresh power unit on his car. At the Marina Bay street circuit there was also a double failure of both Renault engines of the two Alpine cars, but the team managed to compete in the Japanese Grand Prix without mounting new components, a move that resulted in a fourth and a seventh place, allowing them to overtake McLaren in the World Championship. In Austin, however, the use of a new power unit is very likely, especially for Fernando Alonso, as well as for at least one of the two Ferrari cars, most likely Charles Leclerc, who was running with limited power at the Suzuka circuit, amid fears of reliability issues which have affected the Ferrari engine in the first half of the season.
Regarding the gearbox front, on the other hand, there were a lot more changes. Given the track characteristics of Marina Bay, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Lando Norris and Pierre Gasly fitted a new gearbox in Singapore. However, compliance with the seasonal gearbox component limits does not seem to be a problem, since the only ones who have exceeded the limit have done so because they were alerady forced to start from the back of the grid due to the replacement of the power unit. In fact, five gearboxes have only been used mainly by Ferrari-powered cars, specifically those of Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Bottas, Valtteri, Zhou Guanyu and Mick Schumacher.
