Scuderia Ferrari is preparing for the 2022 Formula 1 season after finishing third in the Constructor Standings at the end of the 2021 campaign, thanks to big improvements seen on all fronts, according to team principal Mattia Binotto. The presentation of the 2022 Ferrari F1 car isn scheduled between 16 and 18 February.
Ferrari F1 finished the Formula 1 world championship in third place behind Mercedes and Red Bull, a result that certainly does not make the fans of a brand so noble and rich in history rejoice. However, it is necessary to remember the legacy left by the SF1000. A season, that of 2020, which Ferrari ended in sixth place; the fourth worst season of the Maranello team after those of 1969, 1973 and 1980. The Ferrari F1 team, led by Mattia Binotto, had to react in all areas, to be immediately behind Mercedes and Red Bull.
The 2022 Formula One season is almost upon us and the unknown factor of the fans around the world is to see if Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be able to win again and, why not, fight for the world championship.
According to Mattia Binotto, in the interviews released before the Christmas holidays, the stats and figures of the season that just ended show a clear reversal compared to the terrible 2020 Formula 1 season.
The average of the points collected by the Maranello team’s drivers this year almost doubled: from 7.7 (Sebastian Vettel – Charles Leclerc) to 14.7 (Charles Leclerc – Carlos Sainz). In qualifying the gap from Mercedes went from 1 “34 to 0” 64 while in the race from 1 “07 to 0” 8.
The evolved power unit, installed on the SF21 car of Charles Leclerc in Sochi and in Turkey on the Spaniard’s No. 55 Ferrari car, allowed a gain of about 30 HP as compared to the 2020 engine.
Thanks to his reliability, Carlos Sainz always saw the checkered flag and scored points 20 times, while for the Monegasque the technical failure ahead of the start of the Monaco Grand Prix caused by the accident in qualifying and the unfortunate lap 1 incident in Hungary led to almost 40 points being lost.
The improvement was also the result of the work done in the pits: “We have improved our preparation for the race, strategy and pit stops”, the Italian engineer said, as reported by auto-motor-und-sport.de a few days ago. Ferrari, while not setting new records, showed great consistency in pit stops throughout the season. Despite the flaws seen in Italy, Russia and Turkey, it dropped from an average of 2 ”72 to 2” 55, jumping from 9th to 3rd place in this particular constructor classification.

What if Ferrari F1 hadn’t stopped developing its SF21 after Baku?
With the “ifs” and “buts” you don’t win the world championships but all this can really bring the Maranello team back to triumph. The last victory dates back to the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix and it seems like an eternity from the fans’ point of view. “We look forward to next year with confidence, but we cannot promise that we will challenge for the world title”, Mattia Binotto’s expectations for 2022. “Nobody knows because we have no reference with the new cars. Mercedes and Red Bull have done well so far and will remain strong opponents even with the new era of single-seaters. But our goal must be to improve further and aim for victory ”.
Mattia Binotto believes that the cars of 2022 will offer some freedom to stand out from their rivals despite restrictive regulations, perhaps no longer mainly in aerodynamics, but in completely new areas:
“The key to next year could be in the architecture of the power unit, in the chassis and in the integration of components under the body”. And regarding the engine, he confirmed: “It will be a completely new combustion engine. We will make some changes on the electrical side. That’s why it was important for us to try this part in the last races of 2021 ”.
But the news, promises the team principal of the Italian side, will not be just technical. One of the pillars to make Ferrari a winning team again is the new team spirit. “This includes thinking outside the box, daring to open up new horizons”.
We just have to wait for the presentation of the new Ferrari car scheduled to take place between 16 and 18 February. And thinking about the positive expectations for the new year, a famous sentence by Enzo Ferrari comes to mind: “The best Ferrari ever built is the next one”.
