Power unit: Ferrari can no longer afford a power deficit
In the 2021 Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi Autodrom, the new ERS was introduced on the Ferrari SF21 car which was a success in terms of reliability and performance. Analyzing the gps data it was visible how significant the step was, enough to clear the gap from the super efficient McLaren in the last races of the season, which was crucial for the Maranello team to take third place in the Formula 1 Constructor Standings.
After the hybrid update already seen on the track, all the effort of the Italian side are now aimed at the internal combustion engine (ICE) this winter. As reported by Italian Formula 1 Journalist Giuliano Duchessa for formu1a.uno, the 2022 Ferrari power unit showed “power levels that are adequate to what we expect from the competition. The work is now proceeding on the reliability front. Once we are satisfied we will go back to implementing the hybrid part during the current season”.

The report also reminds us that in terms of homologation, endothermic, turbocharger, MGU-H, exhaust, fuel and oil must be done by 1 March 2022. While the battery, the electronic control unit and the MGU-K motor generator by 1 September 2022, which means that the hybrid part can still be developed during the season (the one Ferrari introduced this year is a success and has room for more).
