Red Bull, masters of pit stops, Scuderia Ferrari second
“I can push to widen the gap even more and make another pit stop; after all, a bit of practice on pit stops could be useful.” “No, not this time.” This is how Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase “joked” towards the end of the 2023 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix, during which, according to the race engineer, the Dutch driver had somewhat overstrained the set of soft tires mounted for the third and final stint of the race at the Spa circuit.
At the Red Bull Ring in Austria, Max Verstappen had instead “won” the showdown with the pit wall to secure an additional pit stop, aimed at setting the fastest lap as the finishing touch to a perfect weekend. During this weekend, the Dutch driver clinched the pole position in Qualifying, the best time in the Sprint Shootout, won the Sprint, and the Grand Prix, while also setting the fastest lap.
At Red Bull, they certainly don’t need training in pit stops, nor do they fear any significant issues when an extra pit stop is required. According to calculations from the Twitter account CodeF1, the mechanics of the Milton Keynes team have achieved an astounding 58% of pit stops in under 2.5 seconds so far. Scuderia Ferrari, second in this unique ranking, is not far behind with a 40% of pit stops below the 2.5-second barrier, while McLaren ranks third with 28% of tire changes completed in less than two and a half seconds.
