Formula One official tyre supplier Pirelli has outlined the strategic options for the Canadian Grand Prix, with a one-stop strategy expected.
Pirelli has brought the three softest compounds from its range to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with the C3 the Hard, C4 Medium and C5 Soft.
The Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes drivers will start on the Medium tyres, after navigating Q2 on the compound, while the Renault drivers, Pierre Gasly and the McLaren duo must start on Softs.
The other drivers on the grid have free choice of starting compound.
“A one-stopper is fastest for the 70-lap race, but there are different options,” confirmed Pirelli, ahead of the race on Sunday.
“The quickest way is to start on the Medium tyre and then switch to Hard after 35-40 laps. The alternative strategy – which is a bit slower – is to start on the Soft tyre and then go to the hard after five to eight laps. This obviously commits to an early stop though. A two-stopper is definitely slowest on paper. The optimal two-stopper would be to start on the Soft tyre, switch to Medium after five laps, do 32 laps on those, then take another set of Mediums to the end.” – the Formula One official tyre supplier concluded.
