The 2018 Formula One season should be extremely interesting and spectacular, according to Pirelli racing manager Mario Isola, who suggested that the next championshp may be very competitive and Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull could not be the only teams involved in the fight for victories and podiums, as McLaren should have a competitive car in 2018. That is the view of Mario Isola, the F1 boss for the sport’s sole tyre supplier Pirelli. “The world championship this year will be interesting,” he told Spain’s Marca sports newspaper.
“Last year we saw that Ferrari was very close to Mercedes and also Red Bull progressed a lot, so I hope we will see five or six teams fighting for victories including McLaren. Williams should also be up there.” – Mario Isola added. He said that one of the British team’s biggest assets is Fernando Alonso – “Fernando is undoubtedly one of the best drivers in the world, and this year he will be able to demonstrate what he is capable of. I am sure that McLaren will develop a lot and return to the place they deserve in 2018.” – Pirelli racing manager Mario Isola continued.
However, Pirelli is reportedly concerned that a new track surface in Barcelona could make pre-season Formula One testing a challenge next month. Just a month before F1’s only winter testing at the Spanish venue takes place, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya last week announced that a full resurfacing is “underway”. Italy’s Autosprint reports that sole F1 tyre supplier Pirelli has subsequently dispatched engineers to Barcelona to “re-examine the characteristics” of the new surface. The report claims Barcelona has informed Pirelli that the surface is similar to the old one, but that the bedding-in process of new bitumen can be problematic.
