Pushing without having to think about degradation and therefore about tyre management: Pirelli has pursued this goal in making the 18-inch tires that will debut in the 2022 Formula 1 season with a year delay compared to what was estimated in line with the move to 2022 also for the technical revolution based on the ground effect. In the last decade, treating tires with gloves has been fundamental for drivers, to the point that there has often been talk of a ‘taxi drivers’ formula, between compounds that have to be saved, as well as fuel management in certan moments of the races.
This will no longer be the case next season, as confirmed by Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera who was interviewed by Sky Sport Italy at the presentation of the Pirelli 2022 Calendar: “With 18-inch tyres the drivers will have more fun, these new tyres will give them the possibility to drive more freely. It is a product closer to road products, in size. For us it is an important challenge, the evaluations for now have been positive, I hope they will give th drivers the opportunity to have fun and entertain the fans”.
The Chief Executive Officer of Pirelli was also asked about the fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton for the 2021 Formula 1 titles, which remains very close with just two races until the end of the season: “They are two champions who represent two different generations. Hamilton remains a great driver and demonstrates that with his quality he can compete with energy of a young champion like Verstappen.” – Marco Tronchetti Provera concluded.
