After Charles Leclerc completed 141 laps yesterday, today it was Carlos Sainz who took to the track for the Pirelli tests at Paul Ricard circuit, where Scuderia Ferrari has in fact replaced Mercedes, who was initially scheduled to take part in this test.
The Spaniard completed 75 laps in the morning session on intermediate tires, for a total distance that is beyond that of full race (53 laps), which the drivers will have to cover on 20 June in the French Grand Prix. Ferrari and Pirelli therefore continue to work on the development of 18-inch tires which will be fitted to F1 cars next season. The official Formula One tyre supplier is giving every team the possibility to test the new tyres, with the exception Williams who did not supply a T-car.
Scuderia Ferrari had already tested the 18-inch tires at Jerez de la Frontera. The intermediates were also tested on the Andalusian circuit, but only to try them on a damp track and then use the slicks. In today’s afternoon program, however, Carlos Sainz will get the chance to drive with the extreme wet tires, an important commitment for the Spaniard, fresh from the first podium of his adventure with the Maranello team, scored in Monte Carlo last Sunday.
