Piero Ferrari is dreaming alongside Ferrari fans everywhere.
Michael Schumacher’s legendary victory in torrential rain remains untouchable in the memories of Formula 1 fans, but it is difficult to ignore the striking connection linking the first Ferrari wins of the only two drivers in F1 history to have won seven world championships.
Michael Schumacher claimed his maiden Ferrari victory at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 1996. Thirty years later, Lewis Hamilton has achieved the same feat. For the German driver, 1996 marked the beginning of his journey as Ferrari’s new leader and symbol of a rebuilding era. The Briton, on the other hand, is writing the second chapter of his Formula 1 career, albeit in a completely different regulatory landscape.
Piero Ferrari highlighted both aspects while speaking to Quotidiano Nazionale.
“I do not believe it is a coincidence that Hamilton secured his first victory with our car at Barcelona, the very same place where Schumi began his extraordinary sequence of successes with Ferrari 30 years ago,” said the son of Enzo Ferrari. “I see it as a sign of destiny, or perhaps even as a positive omen for the future that awaits us.”
Piero Ferrari also made it clear that he was never surprised by Lewis Hamilton’s return to winning form.
“I am not surprised by Hamilton’s ‘rebirth’,” he added. “It was evident that Hamilton did not enjoy driving the ground-effect cars, and on top of that we had not provided either him or Charles Leclerc with a competitive car.”
