Piero Ferrari gave a lengthy interview to Italian magazine Autosprint, discussing the past and present of Formula 1 and the Maranello team. Here is an extract where he reflects on the disappointing start to the 2023 Formula One season for the Scuderia and shares some thoughts on Red Bull’s dominance thanks to the genius of Adrian Newey, while also revealing a behind-the-scenes story from the Luca di Montezemolo era.
Here are some if his comments, as reported by Autosprint.
Piero Ferrari’s words:
“Obviously not, but I feared that things would be difficult. Today we have to race with the material we have…” responds Piero Ferrari when asked if he expected such a challenging start to the 2023 Formula 1 championship for the Maranello team. Everyone hopes that Ferrari will recover as the season progresses. “But recovering in this Formula 1 is complicated. There are budget cap limitations, you can do certain things but not everything you would like. The problem is that, with spending limits, you have to decide how much to invest in improving the current situation without compromising the work on the 2024 car. Patience is required,” notes the Italian businessman and sport personality.

He then focuses on Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur: “We have to give him time to get to the bottom of the problems. He is someone who knows racing well, he has been in the environment for years, and he deserves trust.” And regarding the extensive recruitment campaign announced by the Frenchman: “We need people with diverse experiences. If we look back in history, when we made significant changes in the organization by bringing in personnel from other teams, we saw results. We are good at certain things, but for others, we need specialists from outside.” – the only living son of Enzo Ferrari added.
Meanwhile, Red Bull has dominated the start of the 2023 World Championship and promises to continue doing so throughout the season. “They are very good at building cars that perform well on all circuits. Isn’t that impressive? And this is not a recent development. Today, Red Bull wins with hybrid engines, previously they won with aspirated engines. Sebastian Vettel won four championships with them, and it certainly wasn’t by chance.”
And finally, a behind-the-scenes story about Adrian Newey: “He spoke with Luca di Montezemolo and later with Jean Todt. Apparently, he doesn’t want to move; he likes to stay in England! And besides his undeniable talent, it’s not just him, he has excellent people around him.” – Piero Ferrari concluded.
