The disastrous incident at the start of the Mexican Grand Prix with the Ferrari SF-23 of Charles Leclerc knocked out Sergio Pérez at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in front of his home fans. An overtaking attempt, perhaps overly optimistic, led to a collision, forcing the Red Bull driver to retire after not even completing the first lap.
Checo had qualified fifth in his home race and probably hoped to win for his fans. However, it didn’t turn out that way.
At the start, Sergio Pérez dared to challenge pole-sitter Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen at the very first turn. The Mexican driver pulled alongside the Ferrari driver, who found himself between the two Red Bulls. Sergio Pérez pushed a bit too hard on the pedal, resulting in contact with Charles Leclerc, which in turn sent him off the track.
Immediately, Sergio Pérez attempted to rejoin the race, but the significant damage to his car was evident. It was a retirement difficult to accept for Sergio Pérez, especially on his home turf, and during the same weekend when rumors were already circulating about his potential departure from Red Bull.
In post-race interviews, Checo appears very disappointed about the incident and justifies himself, saying: “I took a risk to come out of the first corner and hope to immediately fight for the win.” Then he points the finger at the Ferrari driver #16: “I didn’t expect Charles to brake so late. It hurts a lot for the fans. I gave it my all. I wanted to give them the victory.”

It’s a logic of his own, where Sergio Pérez thought he could become the race leader right from the first corner, disregarding the other competitors. It could have ended much worse, even though, with another retirement, things become extremely challenging for the Mexican driver in the fight for second place in the championship.
