The first Overtake of the Month award for 2024 has gone to Oliver Bearman for one of his maneuvers on his debut in Saudi Arabia: let’s take another look!
With the first month of the 2024 Formula 1 championship in the books, it’s time to summarize and hand out the first awards. The award for the best overtake of March went to Oliver Bearman.
The English driver is the leading young talent of the Ferrari Driver Academy and made his Formula 1 debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix for the Maranello team. Stepping in for the injured Carlos Sainz, Bearman had only one free practice session before heading into qualifying.
Although he just missed Q3 by a few hundredths, Oliver Bearman’s performance was enough to start from the eleventh spot, a starting position useful for scoring points in the race.
Indeed, Oliver Bearman crossed the finish line in seventh place, four positions ahead of his qualifying. And while the overtake on Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris came “virtually” – thanks to strategy – those on Yuki Tsunoda and Nico Hulkenberg were earned on the track.
Overtake on Yuki Tsunoda Awarded
In particular, what was decisive for winning the Overtake of the Month award was the move on the RB’s Japanese driver. The drivers had launched down the start-finish straight to resume the race after Lance Stroll’s incident. Oliver Bearman targeted Yuki Tsunoda and, after feinting an attack on the outside, he dived back in and made a deep braking maneuver on the inside, freeing himself from the VCARB01.
The winner of the Overtake of the Month award is decided by Formula 1 fans from around the world.

The other overtakes contending for Oliver Bearman’s award are four, two from the race in Bahrain and two from Melbourne. In chronological order, the first two were Perez’s attack on Russell and Carlos Sainz’s on Charles Leclerc; the other two overtakes in the race were Yuki Tsunoda’s on Pierre Gasly and Kevin Magnussen’s on Alex Albon.
Depending on the quality of the overtakes we see in 2024, Oliver Bearman’s maneuver could also enter the contest for Overtake of the Year. In 2023, this award went to Charles Leclerc for his attack on George Russell at Suzuka, the circuit where the fourth event of this world championship is taking place.
