Ferrari’s Move
The arrival of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari starting with the 2025 championship, officially announced at the beginning of February, was a completely unexpected move in the Formula 1 drivers’ market. There had been no hints from the English champion about his willingness to leave Mercedes, just as there was no indication from Maranello of an intention not to renew with Carlos Sainz.
Carlos Sainz’s Victory and Lewis Hamilton’s Uncertain Start
As often happens, especially lately, in Formula 1, a great deal of importance is placed on the latest results, overshadowing and almost forgetting what was achieved previously.
Many are questioning Ferrari’s decision to rely on Hamilton – at the worst start of the season in his career in 2024 – especially after Carlos Sainz’s success in Australia.
Clearly, Ferrari has weighed its choice and, despite the age, one cannot underestimate the value of a seven-time world champion, the record holder for wins and pole positions in F1 history.
Max Verstappen’s Opinion
“If Lewis decides to go somewhere else, as a team, it’s normal to try and do something more to try and get a seven-time world champion,” Max Verstappen acknowledged, supporting Ferrari’s choice when asked about this topic during Thursday’s press conference in Suzuka, adding: “Someone had to make room, and it seemed reasonable to confirm Charles, since he has been working with them for so long. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s how it goes. But Carlos Sainz is good, he doesn’t have to worry and just has to make the right choice.” – the Red Bull driver concluded.
