Oliver Bearman’s future at Haas could face an unexpected financial obstacle, with the British Formula 1 driver reportedly requesting €6 million to remain with the American team for the 2027 season. According to information attributed to Marc Limacher, Haas is unwilling to meet that figure, potentially slowing negotiations over a contract extension. However, the reported salary demand has not been officially confirmed, leaving Ferrari facing another question over how to manage the future of one of its most promising young drivers.
The development comes just days after Oliver Bearman acknowledged at the United States Grand Prix in Austin that unresolved contractual matters were delaying an agreement. Although both the driver and Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu have expressed their desire to continue working together, Ferrari’s involvement in the negotiations makes the situation more complicated than a straightforward contract renewal.
Oliver Bearman’s reported €6 million salary demand complicates Haas negotiations
According to the report, Oliver Bearman is seeking an annual salary of €6 million to continue racing for Haas in 2027. The American team is reportedly reluctant to accept that demand, creating a potential financial disagreement despite the willingness of both parties to maintain their partnership.
There has been no official confirmation of the amount requested, and the reported figure remains unverified. Nevertheless, the possibility of a disagreement over salary introduces another element into negotiations that had previously appeared to revolve primarily around the contractual arrangements involving Ferrari.
Speaking during the Austin Grand Prix weekend, Oliver Bearman had already acknowledged that certain issues remained unresolved, while emphasising that both he and Ayao Komatsu wanted to continue their working relationship.
“From my side, and I think from Ayao Komatsu’s side too, we’re both convinced that we want to continue working together. The only obstacles are contractual matters that are out of my hands,” Oliver Bearman explained.
The British driver also clarified that he had entrusted negotiations to his management and Ferrari, underlining the importance of the Maranello team’s involvement in determining his immediate Formula 1 future.
Why Ferrari is involved in Oliver Bearman’s Haas contract talks
Ferrari’s role makes the situation particularly delicate. Oliver Bearman remains part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, meaning his future is not determined exclusively by his financial agreement with Haas. The Scuderia has an interest in ensuring that the young British driver continues developing in Formula 1 while preserving the possibility of promoting him to its works team in the future.
Oliver Bearman has already made clear that he considers Haas the ideal destination among Formula 1’s midfield teams. At the same time, he has not concealed his ambition to compete for one of the championship’s four leading teams, with Ferrari representing his ultimate objective.
The driver’s relationship with Maranello forms part of the team’s broader plans for its next generation of talent. Ferrari has already invested in his development, and his continued presence on the Formula 1 grid could prove important if an opportunity eventually becomes available within the Scuderia.
The situation also comes amid discussions about Ferrari’s long-term plans involving Oliver Bearman and Rafael Câmara, with both young drivers emerging as important figures in the Italian team’s wider development programme.
Ayao Komatsu wants Oliver Bearman to lead Haas in 2027
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has already confirmed his intention to retain Oliver Bearman for the 2027 season. The Japanese manager believes the British driver has developed sufficiently to assume a leading technical role within the team.
His confidence reflects the progress Oliver Bearman has made during his time with Haas, both in terms of performance and his growing contribution to the team’s development. The American outfit therefore has sporting reasons to seek an agreement, even if the reported financial demands have introduced an additional obstacle.
The team’s driver plans have also become clearer following the confirmation that Rafael Câmara will join Haas in 2027, replacing Esteban Ocon. However, that announcement was not accompanied by official confirmation of Oliver Bearman’s contract extension.
The decision has left the British driver’s position unresolved despite Ayao Komatsu’s repeated assurances that Haas wants to continue working with him. The team principal has also discussed the potential of Oliver Bearman and Rafael Câmara as part of Haas’s future, highlighting the importance of developing young drivers capable of contributing to the team’s progress.
If the reported €6 million request proves accurate, the financial question would add an unexpected complication to a renewal that otherwise appears to have the support of both the team and the driver.
Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari future adds another complication
The situation becomes more significant when considering Ferrari’s current driver plans. Although the Scuderia believes in Oliver Bearman’s abilities, the Italian team appears determined to continue relying on Lewis Hamilton for as long as the seven-time world champion wishes to remain in Formula 1.
That position creates a difficult balance for Maranello. Ferrari wants to preserve the future potential of its young British prospect without disrupting its existing driver line-up, making another season with Haas an attractive solution.
For Oliver Bearman, maintaining a full-time Formula 1 race seat is particularly important at this stage of his career. A move into a reserve-driver role could interrupt the competitive development he is currently gaining through regular Grand Prix participation.
Ferrari therefore has an interest in ensuring that Haas remains a viable destination while it continues planning its longer-term driver strategy. The wider implications can also be considered in the context of the 2027 Formula 1 driver market and Ferrari’s existing commitments.
Could Ferrari help Haas cover Oliver Bearman’s salary?
If Oliver Bearman’s reported €6 million salary demand is confirmed, Haas may not necessarily have to bear the entire financial commitment alone. Ferrari could potentially become more directly involved in negotiations, including by contributing towards the driver’s salary.
Such an arrangement remains hypothetical, and there is currently no confirmation that Ferrari has offered to cover any portion of Oliver Bearman’s remuneration. Nevertheless, the possibility reflects Maranello’s interest in keeping the young driver on the Formula 1 grid while a future opportunity with the works team remains unavailable.
From Ferrari’s perspective, contributing towards the cost of retaining Oliver Bearman could represent a relatively modest investment compared with the potential consequences of losing a driver it may eventually wish to promote.
The immediate priority remains resolving the contractual issues between Haas, Oliver Bearman’s representatives and Ferrari. With Ayao Komatsu keen to retain the British driver, the sporting intentions appear aligned, but the reported financial disagreement could still complicate the process.
Whether the €6 million figure proves accurate or not, Oliver Bearman’s future has become an important question for Ferrari’s longer-term planning. The Scuderia must balance its commitment to Lewis Hamilton with the need to protect the development of a young driver who could eventually play a significant role in its Formula 1 future.
