Christian Danner has suggested that Oliver Bearman should focus on securing a seat at McLaren rather than relying solely on Ferrari for his Formula 1 future. The young Briton, currently a member of Ferrari’s prestigious driver academy, has long aspired to race in the iconic red livery alongside Charles Leclerc.
Initially, when Lewis Hamilton struggled during his difficult first season at Ferrari, it seemed plausible that Ollie Bearman could step into the Scuderia as soon as 2027. The young driver made a solid start to his rookie campaign, impressively achieving three top-six finishes before the end of the season, which reinforced his potential to take a Ferrari race seat in the near future.
However, Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence in the early stages of F1’s new regulatory era has altered the landscape. His remarkable performances, highlighted by his first podium for Ferrari in China, have made it increasingly likely that Hamilton will fulfill at least the remainder of his three-year contract, delaying any potential opportunities for Bearman at Maranello.
Christian Danner advises Bearman to consider McLaren
According to Italian journalist Roberto Chinchero, Hamilton’s revitalized form has forced Bearman to reassess his prospects. Danner, speaking to Motorsport-Magazin, recommended that the young British driver begin exploring alternatives outside Ferrari, emphasizing that securing a McLaren seat could be a strategic move for his career. Danner noted that while Bearman undoubtedly has a future in Formula 1, his current Ferrari contract limits his immediate freedom to make the move.
One major complication is McLaren’s current driver lineup, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris both on long-term contracts. The team, having claimed consecutive constructors’ titles, has consistently emphasized the stability and effectiveness of their existing pairing, suggesting little appetite for changes. While Piastri has occasionally been linked to a potential Ferrari move, it is likely that any approach from Bearman to McLaren CEO Zak Brown would be met with resistance.
Exploring alternative paths: Red Bull and Audi
If Bearman’s Ferrari ambitions do not materialize in the near term, other options may still be available. Red Bull’s long-term plans could open doors, particularly given Max Verstappen’s growing uncertainty about staying beyond 2028 amid dissatisfaction with the latest regulations. Bearman, who previously competed closely with Isack Hadjar in Formula 2, could potentially be considered by Red Bull as an external replacement, although Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson remain the most immediate prospects within the team’s junior pathway.
Mercedes’ driver market is another potential avenue, though it is unlikely that the George Russell–Kimi Antonelli partnership will be altered unless Max Verstappen decides to leave Red Bull and is willing to remain in Formula 1 for the long term.
Meanwhile, Audi represents an intriguing long-term option. With ambitions to challenge for titles by 2030, the German manufacturer could become a significant player in the driver market once Nico Hulkenberg retires. For Ollie Bearman, keeping Audi on his radar could be a strategic move, offering an opportunity to secure a competitive seat while his Ferrari pathway remains blocked by Hamilton’s continued presence.
Overall, while Ferrari remains Ollie Bearman’s dream destination, Danner’s advice underscores the importance of flexibility and strategic thinking. Exploring seats at McLaren, Red Bull, or even Audi could ensure that Bearman remains on a clear trajectory toward a successful Formula 1 career, rather than waiting indefinitely for a Ferrari opportunity that may not arrive in the immediate future.
