Oliver Bearman’s ambition to secure a Ferrari Formula 1 race seat in 2028 is reportedly complicating negotiations over his future with Haas. The British driver is seeking assurances from Maranello over a potential opportunity to replace Lewis Hamilton, whose current contract is due to expire at the end of the 2027 season. The situation has created a delicate dilemma for Ferrari, with Rafael Câmara also emerging as a possible contender for a future seat.
Could Lewis Hamilton leave Ferrari after 2027? That possibility is central to Oliver Bearman’s long-term ambitions. However, the British youngster’s contractual relationship with Ferrari could come to an end if the Scuderia does not offer him a race seat for 2028, potentially leaving him free to negotiate with another Formula 1 team.
Oliver Bearman wants Ferrari guarantees for 2028
Ferrari currently holds the contractual rights to Oliver Bearman until 2027. If the Maranello team does not provide him with a race seat for the following season, the young driver would be free to sign elsewhere. For Ferrari, developing a promising talent only to lose him to a rival team would represent a significant disappointment, particularly after the investment made in his progression through the ranks.
Lewis Hamilton’s existing agreement is set to expire at the end of next season, although the question of his future is far from straightforward. Meanwhile, the delay in finalising Oliver Bearman’s new contract with Haas appears to be directly connected to his determination to drive for Ferrari in 2028.
According to Motorsport.com, the difficulties surrounding an agreement are more complex than they initially appeared. Sources within Ferrari suggest that Oliver Bearman’s management has insisted on obtaining guarantees about his future as a full-time Scuderia driver in 2028, with the possibility of Lewis Hamilton retiring or leaving the team forming part of the discussions.
Rafael Câmara adds pressure to Ferrari’s 2028 driver decision
As reported last week, Rafael Câmara’s promotion to Formula 1 with Haas means Oliver Bearman now has a direct rival should a seat become available at Ferrari. The longer Bearman waits for his opportunity, the more experience the Brazilian driver will accumulate at the highest level of motorsport.
Rafael Câmara could therefore become the second natural candidate to replace the seven-time world champion, particularly if Oliver Bearman ultimately decides to pursue opportunities elsewhere and end his association with Ferrari.
The situation presents Ferrari with an important decision about its future driver line-up. The Scuderia must consider whether it can offer Oliver Bearman a sufficiently clear path to a race seat while also managing its existing commitments to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
The uncertainty comes as Ferrari prepares for the coming seasons, with the relationship between its current drivers already attracting attention following the Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc rivalry ahead of 2027.
Ayao Komatsu addresses Oliver Bearman’s delayed Haas renewal
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has also addressed the delay in agreeing a new contract with Oliver Bearman, emphasising the driver’s contribution to the team and the importance of building a competitive car for 2027.
“I don’t like to go into the details of our contract, but Ollie is showing extraordinary potential. He’s contributing a lot to the team’s success and we want to grow together. We want to move up the grid as a team. So, first of all, we need a competitive car for 2027. It won’t be an easy challenge because we made a mistake in 2026, and we’re paying the price for that in 2027 as well. But our objective is to maximise everything within our control, really trying to produce a competitive car for 2027.”
While Haas remains focused on improving its competitiveness, Oliver Bearman’s long-term ambitions could depend on the decisions Ferrari makes about its 2028 driver line-up. With Lewis Hamilton’s contract approaching its scheduled expiry and Rafael Câmara gaining Formula 1 experience, the Scuderia faces the possibility of having to choose between retaining one of its most promising young drivers and allowing him to pursue his career elsewhere.
