Oliver Bearman is widely regarded as the leading talent within Ferrari’s driver academy and harbors ambitions of one day replacing Lewis Hamilton at the Scuderia. As Hamilton’s eventual departure looms, Ferrari faces a critical decision: whether to promote from within by elevating Bearman or to pursue another established superstar from outside the team.
Currently, Bearman is contracted to Haas—an engine customer of Ferrari—for at least two more years. Interestingly, Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Ferrari also runs for two years, with reports indicating that both parties hold options to extend their collaboration into 2027.
At 40 years old, Hamilton is positioned sixth in the 2025 World Championship standings, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc by 16 points. However, Hamilton has not yet secured a Grand Prix podium during the first half of the season.
Oliver Bearman has praised Hamilton as the strongest driver in Formula 1 when it comes to mental resilience. In a recent interview on the ‘P1 with Matt and Tommy’ YouTube channel, Bearman was invited to describe his ideal driver by skill category. He identified reigning world champion Max Verstappen as the fastest and most adaptable driver currently on the grid.
When discussing fitness, Oliver Bearman singled out Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher as the benchmark, highlighting Schumacher’s pioneering approach to physical preparation, which set new standards in the sport before his retirement in 2012.
Yet, for mental strength, Ollie Bearman named Lewis Hamilton as unmatched. He noted that Hamilton’s career has been defined by remarkable comeback drives during pivotal moments, such as the 2018 German Grand Prix, the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, and the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix. Bearman also referenced Hamilton’s personal struggles following the heartbreak of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix but emphasized that Hamilton remains determined to claim an unprecedented eighth world championship before retiring.
When asked about his own strengths, Oliver Bearman modestly attributed racecraft to himself but acknowledged Max Verstappen’s raw speed and adaptability as superior. He reiterated Hamilton’s exceptional mental toughness and Schumacher’s fitness leadership, framing his ideal driver as a combination of these traits.
Regarding his progress with Ferrari, Oliver Bearman conveyed confidence in his future prospects. In an interview with Motorsport.com, he expressed belief that Ferrari also sees potential in him, which has been demonstrated by their continued support and investment in his career. Oliver Bearman shared that this belief motivates him daily to improve and strive to become the best possible driver so he can one day race and win for Ferrari.
After the first 12 races of the 2025 season, the Ferrari junior sits 18th in the World Championship standings, ahead of only one full-time competitor, Gabriel Bortoleto. He scored points in three of the opening four rounds but has not added to that tally since.
Despite this, Bearman’s qualifying performances have shown promise, particularly in his head-to-head battles against seasoned race winner Esteban Ocon, whom he has outqualified six times out of 13 sessions. However, within the rookie class, Oliver Bearman has been overshadowed by competitors such as Isack Hadjar from Red Bull and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.
Bearman recognizes that improving consistency is crucial if he is to make a compelling case for promotion to Ferrari’s Formula 1 race seat in the near future.
