Believing in oneself
Due to the sudden withdrawal of Carlos Sainz, Ferrari put 18-year-old Oliver Bearman in the car for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The British driver, from Chelmsford in Essex, qualified 11th and finished the race in 7th place, surprising everyone with his composure and maturity.
This impressive performance earned him a seat with Haas for the 2025 Formula 1 season. With the American team, Oliver Bearman has already competed in two races—in Azerbaijan and Mexico—replacing Kevin Magnussen and securing one point for his future team.
Oliver Bearman’s thoughts
In an interview with the Financial Times, Oliver Bearman reflected on the doubts he faced leading up to his debut: “In your first F1 race, you always wonder if you’re good enough. It’s a bit like impostor syndrome, where you find yourself asking: ‘Do I really belong here?’ and ‘Do I really have what it takes?’ After the race in Jeddah, I knew those questions had been answered.” – the future Haas driver pointed out.
Impostor syndrome refers to the mindset where one feels undeserving of personal success and consistently underestimates their own abilities.
Oliver Bearman concluded by expressing satisfaction with his ability to rise to the challenge: “This year, my appearances in Formula 1 have been quite strange and unexpected. No reserve driver starts the season expecting to race, because opportunities are rare. Having had two chances makes me realize how lucky I’ve been. I seized those opportunities with both hands and made the most of them. I delivered performances to be proud of and managed to get noticed.” – the Ferrari junior added.
