Rolling back the years
Speaking of classic cars there were a few F1 versions on show in a pre-race display that included Mika Hakkinen back behind the wheel of a McLaren that steered him towards his first world championship at Suzuka in 1998.
Former drivers including Jean Alesi were also present in a small field that included vintage Ferrari and Benetton cars.
Old friends in the paddock
Felipe Massa was another star from F1’s past making a reappearance at Suzuka following his retirement at the end of 2017.
The former Ferrari diver is a popular member inside the paddock, especially with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo as the duo exchanged a friendly hug on the grid in the moments leading up to the race.
