Once again, the Florida track delivered anything but a predictable qualifying session. Despite McLaren entering the day as favourites, they had to concede to an insatiable contender: four-time world champion Max Verstappen. Unlike yesterday, Lando Norris managed to beat Kimi Antonelli by just three thousandths, but he couldn’t overcome the Red Bull driver, who took pole with a lap of 1:26.204—also a new track record—with a margin of only 65 thousandths.
Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Kimi Antonelli will start in the top three positions. Kimi continues to show strong form in Miami and will try to recover tomorrow what was taken from him in the Sprint, between the opening contact and, above all, Max’s unsafe release. Ferrari, unfortunately, seems to be struggling. After Q3 in Florida, Charles Leclerc finds himself relegated to P8, behind both Williams drivers, while Lewis Hamilton will start all the way down in P12.
Qualifying ended with an investigation into Alexander Albon for an incident in the pit lane during Q1. After hearing the driver, the FIA handed him only a reprimand, which does not affect the qualifying result in any way.
Provisional Starting Grid for the Miami GP (10:00 PM)
At this point, we can provide you with the provisional starting grid, reminding you that the formation lap for the GP is scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, May 4, at 10:00 PM Central European Summer Time.
Why do we say provisional? Because teams’ engineers might still encounter issues with the cars before tomorrow’s race. If replacing a component governed by the regulations becomes necessary, the FIA would be forced to drop the driver of that car several positions on the grid.
