The Qatar Grand Prix is the replacement of the Australian Grand Prix in November, as Formula 1 officially confirmed earlier today. In this way the sport has finally filled the gap on the 2021 calendar and chooses a race in the Middle East again.
The 2021 Formula 1 calendar is an ongoing puzzle for Formula 1 management. Due to the coronavirus it remains uncertain which Grands Prix can and cannot take place, and that makes F1 not only need a plan B, but actually also plan C to Z.
On to Qatar
Formula 1 has done a good job with this because again a gap has been filled. The Australian Grand Prix which was initially postponed to November (it was scheduled to be first race of the year), was later cancelled. This gap in November had not been filled until now but Qatar has been found as a suitable replacement. It will be the first F1 race ever held in Qatar.
The country that will host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 doesn’t need to create a new circuit though. The Losail International Circuit already had a Grade 1 license, and has been on the MotoGP calendar since 2004. However, it will now make its debut on the F1 calendar in 2021.
