Ferrari is planning the homologation of engine 4 for Carlos Sainz ahead of next week’s Turkish Grand Prix at Intercity Istanbul Park. The Maranello team will entrust the Spanish driver with the power unit equipped with the new hybrid system which should allow a power increase of about ten horsepower.
Obviously Carlos Sainz will have to receive a grid penalty exactly as happened to Charles Leclerc in the last round of the 2021 Formula 1 season, the Russian GP, so he will start from the back of the grid. The Scuderia, in fact, had planned the debut of the new ERS in Istanbul, but the reliability problems that emerged on the Monegasque driver’s battery after the crash in the start of the Hungarian GP (when engine 2 was “scrapped”) have made the Maranello technicians decide to introduce the fourth power unit earlier on the SF21 car of Charles.
Now it will be the Spaniard’s turn, after the brilliant third place brought home in Sochi with the SF21 still in standard engine configuration.
As we have already underlined on several occasions, the introduction of the new hybrid for the Scuderia is a great opportunity to verify the validity of the new solutions that have been introduced: the lithium-ion battery with solid-state electrolyte and the transition of the hybrid system from low (400 volts) to high voltage (800 volts) has meant that the entire system has been revised to ensure durability, safety and performance.

This is an important generational leap that will mainly give its effects in view of the 2022 season for the ground effect car that was specially conceived around the Superfast engine, an innovative 6-cylinder turbo at the top with new ducts and a high-pressure combustion chamber that will allow faster ignition times.
After the experience at Sochi Autodrom in the Russian GP and the data collected on Charles Leclerc’s car, in Turkey we will understand more clearly the advantages that the SF21 car will be able to gain from an ERS system that is projecting towards the future, given that the 2022 engine will be frozen for three years.
