It had been in the air for a while, but now it’s official. The FIA has given the green light to the entry of a new team onto the F1 grid. This team is Michael Andretti’s, with the support of Cadillac, which will now need to negotiate commercial agreements with FOM. The eleventh team will join Formula 1 no earlier than 2025.

The FIA carefully analyzed the request before granting approval. The Andretti team is not the only one that submitted its candidacy, but it’s the only one that met all the stringent requirements set by the Federation.

In President Ben Sulayem‘s statement, we can read: “The FIA has been very clear in setting stringent criteria for the expression of interest procedure. Our goal was to approve only potential entries that met these criteria and added value to our sport. […] Following the procedure, we have decided that the Andretti Formula Racing LLC request will proceed to the next stage of the application process.”

The president then added: “Andretti Formula Racing LLC was the only one to meet all the selection criteria that were imposed. I want to congratulate Michael Andretti and his team on the result. I also want to thank all the other teams for their interest and participation.”

So, the entry of the new team onto the grid is not yet secure as it is subject to the next stages of the selection process. In particular, all the necessary commercial agreements will need to be reached before receiving the final approval to become the eleventh team on the grid. We know how complex these negotiations can be given the significant financial interests involved in Formula 1. Even the current teams have not shown much enthusiasm for the possibility of having an eleventh team on the grid. However, the Andretti team’s desire to become a new F1 team is strong, and they will do everything they can to achieve it.
