Just a few hours before the start of the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix, there is good news for the Styrian circuit, owned by Red Bull and returning to the calendar in 2014 after a 10-year absence from the Formula One championship. The Spielberg track has renewed its contract with F1 and will remain part of the championship program until at least the 2030 campaign.
This announcement should not be taken for granted for a European circuit, which, like many others, is trying to secure its place in the spotlight within a world championship that increasingly looks towards new circuits emerging outside of Europe.
The Austrian Grand Prix holds a historic place in Formula 1, having been held at this venue – which has changed layouts and names several times over the years – for 36 editions as the Austrian Grand Prix. In addition to these, there were also the two editions of the Styrian GP, held in 2020 and 2021 to increase the number of races on the Formula 1 calendar during the years affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Therefore, the Red Bull Ring has secured its position in the premier category of motorsport for several more years. According to the intentions of Stefano Domenicali, chief executive officer of Formula 1, the calendar in 2024 is expected to reach a record number of 24 events. Furthermore, Austria has also been home to the Sprint Race in recent years, a new format introduced by the championship that seems to work particularly well on this track.
