Challenging Day
The qualifying session for the 2023 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix did not see Scuderia Ferrari, especially Charles Leclerc, shine. The Monegasque driver, who had already faced difficulties throughout the three practice sessions, once again struggled to keep the notoriously tricky SF-23 on the track. The Maranello’s #16 encountered significant issues, particularly at Turn 1, as he went off track on multiple occasions in that section. Despite numerous errors that were relatively consequence-free, the Ferrari man ended up paying a hefty price in Q3.
Numerous Mistakes
During the decisive session for claiming the pole position, the ’97-born driver once again lost control of his car, sliding into the barriers at the exit of Turn 8. This mistake resulted from his continuous pursuit of the limit, which Charles Leclerc continued despite having a notably precarious confidence in the vehicle. Additionally, before the start of the qualifying, Charles Leclerc had seen both the power unit and gearbox of his car replaced. This precautionary decision did not lead to penalties; however, the situation could change if serious damage is found on his SF-23.
Radio Fury
It was evident that Charles Leclerc’s mood was not at its best during Q1 when he narrowly avoided a potentially shocking early elimination by a mere fraction of seconds. After dodging the threat of starting from the rear, the Ferrari driver vented his frustration to his pit wall, blaming them for not paying adequate attention to the track traffic. Speaking with his race engineer, Xavier Marcos, Leclerc clearly expressed his annoyance: “Damn it, let’s focus on the traffic. Traffic is the most important thing. Timing is everything. It’s important. It’s the only priority we have. Let’s focus on this aspect, and everything will be fine. Otherwise, we’ll be out in Q2.”
Mounting a Comeback
Fortunately for Charles Leclerc and Scuderia Ferrari, this prophecy did not come true. However, after the Q3 incident, Charles Leclerc’s starting position for the race won’t be particularly favorable. The beloved Ferrari driver will begin tomorrow’s race from the ninth position, on the fifth row alongside Logan Sargeant’s Williams, who also crashed during the final session. The hope for Charles Leclerc is that tomorrow’s race day will at least offer him the opportunity to launch a comeback attempt.
