Nigel Mansell Shares Optimism Over Lewis Hamilton’s Momentum in First Season With Ferrari
Nigel Mansell is part of a rare and distinguished group of British racing drivers from the modern Formula 1 era who have had the opportunity to drive for Scuderia Ferrari, the most iconic and historically significant team in the sport. Now, in the 2025 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton has joined that elite list, becoming the latest British driver to take on the challenge of racing in the famous red car of Maranello. His arrival at Ferrari follows the unexpected debut of young British rookie Oliver Bearman, who stepped in for an injured Carlos Sainz at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and instantly caught global attention.
As Formula 1 approached its twelfth round of the season at the 2025 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was still searching for his first traditional podium finish as a Scuderia Ferrari driver. Although the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion had claimed a Sprint Race victory earlier in the season at the Chinese Grand Prix and secured a third-place finish in the Sprint format at the Miami Grand Prix, he had yet to convert that short-format form into a full-race podium result on Sunday.
Hamilton’s first year with Ferrari has been complicated by the team’s ongoing technical struggles, which have arguably affected him more than teammate Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari SF-25 has lacked the consistency needed to challenge for victories on a regular basis, particularly in race trim. However, internal reports from Maranello indicate that the team believes a rear suspension upgrade, set to be introduced in the coming rounds, could offer a much-needed solution to one of the car’s most persistent and limiting issues. Whether this technical update will be enough to make a meaningful difference in the car’s competitiveness over the remainder of the season remains to be seen.
Nigel Mansell, who experienced both the triumphs and disappointments of racing with Ferrari during his own career, offered his insights into Lewis Hamilton’s adaptation to life with the Italian team during the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone. Speaking during the pre-race grid walk conducted by Sky Sports F1’s Martin Brundle, the 1992 Formula 1 World Champion shared his perspective on Hamilton’s progress and outlook for the race.
According to Mansell, Lewis Hamilton appears to be building momentum during his debut season with the Scuderia. The former Ferrari driver suggested that Hamilton, while still waiting for a breakthrough moment, was beginning to show the signs of a driver growing more comfortable with the machinery and extracting stronger performance from the car. Mansell believed that Hamilton had an outside chance of delivering a strong result at Silverstone, even suggesting that under the right conditions, a win was not out of the question.
Mansell also praised several of Hamilton’s competitors on the 2025 grid, including Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri of McLaren Racing, as well as George Russell of Mercedes. He highlighted the competitive nature of this generation of drivers and noted that Max Verstappen’s pole position performance at Silverstone had been nothing short of exceptional—further evidence of how intense the battle at the front of the grid has become.
Heading into his home race at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton was sitting sixth in the FIA Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship standings, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc by 28 points. However, Hamilton had begun to show improvement in qualifying pace, having outqualified Leclerc in three of the previous four Grands Prix. Despite that qualifying edge, Hamilton’s race pace still appeared to be marginally behind Leclerc’s over full race distances—something Ferrari continues to analyze as it works on maximizing performance under varying track conditions.
Looking back on Nigel Mansell’s own time as a Ferrari driver offers valuable context for understanding Hamilton’s current situation. Mansell made his Formula 1 debut back in 1980 with Team Lotus, taking part in the final three races of that season under the guidance of legendary team boss Colin Chapman. After spending four years with Lotus, he moved to Williams, where he emerged as a championship contender by finishing second in the Drivers’ Championship in both 1986 and 1987.
Frustrated with how Williams had handled his title challenges, Nigel Mansell sought a new environment and was signed by Ferrari for the 1989 season, replacing Italian driver Michele Alboreto. During his two seasons with the Maranello-based team, Mansell secured two Grand Prix victories and reached the podium on six occasions. In 1990, he was partnered with four-time World Champion Alain Prost, who had a famously tense rivalry with Ayrton Senna at McLaren. Their brief partnership at Ferrari was marred by friction, with Alain Prost accusing Mansell of jealousy during a season in which Prost more than doubled Mansell’s points total.
Following his stint with Ferrari, Mansell returned to Williams, where he finally captured his long-awaited Formula 1 World Championship in 1992—one of the most dominant seasons in the sport’s history.
For Lewis Hamilton, who is already a seven-time World Champion, the mission at Ferrari is clear. While matching Nigel Mansell’s three career victories with Ferrari would be a strong milestone in his first year with the team, Hamilton’s ultimate goal is far more ambitious. He is determined to claim his elusive eighth World Championship title and deliver it in the red of Ferrari—a feat that would not only place him alone at the top of the all-time titles list but also bring Scuderia Ferrari its first drivers’ title since Kimi Räikkönen’s championship win back in 2007.
As the 2025 Formula 1 season continues, Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton, and Charles Leclerc all remain under pressure to deliver results worthy of the team’s proud legacy. The technical upgrades on the horizon and Hamilton’s improving form may yet prove decisive as the team looks to reclaim its place at the front of the grid.
