Nigel Mansell’s 1992 Formula 1 world championship was secured in one of the most iconic cars in the sport’s history, yet the British racing legend has admitted that he always held a special preference for Ferrari over the team that ultimately brought him his championship glory: Williams. Despite spending only two seasons behind the wheel for the Scuderia, Maranello left an indelible mark on Mansell’s heart.
Having already established himself as one of the premier talents on the F1 grid in the late 1980s, Mansell became the final driver personally chosen by the legendary Enzo Ferrari himself. He remains the last British driver to win a Grand Prix in Ferrari’s famous red livery, a feat that Lewis Hamilton will be aiming to replicate during his second season with the team in 2026. Mansell’s prediction in 2020 that Ferrari would not be winning a title in the near future adds an intriguing narrative if Hamilton manages to claim the championship in 2026, potentially proving the F1 icon wrong.
Mansell reflects on his preference for Ferrari
During a recent interview with BUDDS, Mansell was asked to compare the two major teams that defined his career: Ferrari and Williams. Without hesitation, he indicated that Ferrari was his favorite. He reflected on the unique experiences he enjoyed with the Italian team, such as being invited to test new Ferrari models, including a Testarossa on the track. Mansell recalled how he was able to offer input on the car’s handling, demonstrating the level of involvement and personal attention Ferrari provided to its drivers. He contrasted this with his time at Williams, joking that while the team was highly successful, it lacked the same personal touches and memorable experiences.
Mansell explained that Ferrari had the ability to provide experiences that very few other teams could offer, highlighting the personal gifts, opportunities, and the special atmosphere of Maranello. He acknowledged that he enjoyed his time at Williams and valued the team’s professionalism, but he found Ferrari uniquely special, both for the memories and the personal engagement it offered its drivers.
Williams and the 1992 championship fallout
Mansell’s relationship with Williams ended on a somewhat sour note following his 1992 world championship due to a contract dispute that had emerged earlier in the season. Reports indicated that the British driver had requested a new deal, but had delayed signing it because he believed his exceptional performance that year warranted a substantial pay increase. He briefly returned to Williams for a few races in 1994. Fellow drivers, including David Coulthard and Alain Prost, later described how challenging Mansell could be to work with during his career, with Prost noting a degree of jealousy during their time as teammates at Ferrari before Mansell’s final stint at Williams.
Interestingly, Williams’ interest in signing Prost for the 1993 season played a key role in Mansell’s push to negotiate a better salary for himself. While the British icon’s relationship with Williams ended after a contract disagreement, his enduring affection for Ferrari underscores the special connection he felt with Maranello, a bond defined by unique experiences, personal involvement, and a sense of privilege in being part of one of F1’s most storied teams.
